Baldwin’s Poetry Pals

Students shared original works with guests during a poetry reading in the Lower School Library.

Penelope Laurans Fitzgerald ’62 wrote a limerick for Grade IV students as a part of Baldwin’s Pen Pal Program. The students recently completed their poetry unit, learning about haiku, sonnets and odes.

Featured in a keepsake book amongst a collection of the students’ own favorite works, Penelope’s playful limerick is a tribute to the enduring spirit of every Baldwin girl.

Lines for the Baldwin Fourth Grade

Pages from a Grade VI keepsake book.

Three cheers for the Baldwin fourth grade:
A feminine fearless brigade.
You are clever and smart
And I know you have heart
Yes, you ladies have all got it made!

For great Baldwin women are strong.
Though things may get hard and life long,
We’ve been taught to hold fast
To the things that will last:
That’s scholarship, friendship and song.

When we are dismayed or can’t cope,
When life seems a long upward slope,
Like your pal Charlie Brown
We will never get down
We will rise up with passion and hope!

And whether we’re old – or untried –
There’s one thing in which we’re allied,
Whatever unfurls
We are still “thinkingirls”:
Hail Baldwin! Our Leader and Guide!
