Cells, Up Close and Personal – Dr. Dorfman, Biology

Cell Model By Cristina Artis' 17

Grade VII Biology students explore the structures called organelles that comprise the eukaryotic plant and animal cells. The cell model project, featured here, serves as an aid to learning and internalizing the information. Each student is required to prepare a three-dimensional model of a cell. The model is constructed of materials appropriate to the structure and function of the different organelles. Household materials such as thread, buttons, pasta and pipe cleaners comprise the models. Students may choose to construct either a plant cell or an animal cell and must include all the organelles appropriate to that type of cell. Each completed model includes a key and a brochure that takes the viewer on a journey through the cell.

Claire Tobin ’17 advertises her model cell in her travel brochure:

“Take an all-inclusive trip through the fascinating Plant Cell.
More exciting than the Seven Wonders of the World!
See the Fourteen Wonders of the Plant Cell!
From the Great Cell Wall to the Towering Golgi Bodies.
Prepare to be amazed!”
